Summer is here. That means long days, warm evenings, and a craving for cool treats. Ice cream is a go-to for many people during the hotter months.
Kids ask for it at the beach. Adults sneak a cone after work. Whether you buy it at the store or make it yourself, it’s one of summer’s biggest pleasures.
But with so many ice creams to choose from, which ones are actually better for your health?
To answer that, Spain’s Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) ran a study. They used the NutriScore system, reports 20Minutos.

These Scored Best on the NutriScore Scale
This system looks at things like sugar, saturated fat, additives, and ingredient quality. It gives each product a grade from A to E. A is the healthiest. E is the least healthy.
Three ice creams scored reasonably well in this review.
First up is the Gelatelli Huracán popsicle from Lidl. It’s a bright, colorful ice pop that’s popular with kids. It contains 105 calories per 100 grams, with 3 grams of fat and 14 grams of sugar. It received a C on the NutriScore scale.
Next is Pirulo Happy from Nestlé. This one has 70 calories per 100 grams and contains 20% fruit juice. It received a better grade — a B. That makes it one of the top options for those looking for a slightly healthier treat.
The third one is the Nestlé cream sandwich ice cream. It’s more indulgent. It has 261 calories per 100 grams. The sugar content is a bit lower than some other creamy ice creams, but it still got a C.
Enjoy with Balance
These results don’t mean you should eat ice cream every day. These treats are still desserts. Even the better-rated ones should be enjoyed in moderation.
Spain consumes a lot of ice cream. According to a recent report, the average person in Spain ate around three liters in 2023. That’s 140 million liters nationwide.
So next time you’re reaching into the freezer, you’ll know which options are on the lighter side. But like all good things, the key is balance.
