What is happening?
Monday, Donald Trump revealed two major statements regarding the war in Ukraine.
50-day deadline for Putin
First of all, the US President gave the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, a 50-day deadline to make peace in Ukraine – or suffer the consequences.
Threatens 100 % tariffs
The consequences being that the US will slap Russia with a 100 % tariff, if the deal is not made.
Targeting Russian trade partners as well
The biggest risk for Russia is that Trump also hinted that he would hit countries buying Russian oil and gas with tariffs.
This would include some of Russia’s biggest trading partners such as China and India.
Weapons heading for Ukraine
The second big announcement was that the US will now send a huge load of weapons for Ukraine, including the highly-wanted Patriot Missiles.
The deal is that the other NATO-members will pay the US for the weapons. US will send the weapons to NATO, which will then coordinate the deliveries to Ukraine.
Trump tired of Putin
The confrontational tone from Donald Trump is a stark contrast to earlier, when Trump accused Ukraine of starting the war, feeding the Russian narrative of why the war even started.
But recently, Trump has grown increasingly frustrated with Putin.
Sabotaging peace
In an interview med BBC, Donald Trump said that he had been close to brtokering af ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia several times, but that fresh Russian attacks sabotaged the final steps.
Not a single occurence
According to Trump, Putin has sabotaged the peace-efforts four times, making it impossible for Trump to fullfill his election promise of ending the war in Ukraine quickly.
