Volkswagen is reportedly planning to discontinue its coupe-styled electric SUV, the ID.5, by 2027 due to sluggish demand. The move is part of a broader strategy to cut underperforming models and refocus on stronger-selling vehicles.

ID.5 Faces Early Retirement

Reports suggest the Volkswagen ID.5 will be phased out as early as 2027, ending its production after just seven years with no second-generation model in the works.

Sales Lag Behind ID.4

While the ID.5’s sales are officially tallied alongside the ID.4, the majority of the 84,900 units sold in the first half of 2025 were the more spacious and conventionally styled ID.4.

Limited Market Reach

The ID.5 was never launched in the United States, further limiting its global potential. European buyers have also shown stronger preference for practical SUV shapes over coupe-style designs.

Part of a Wider VW Shake-Up

The ID.5’s rumored end follows other model cuts, including the Passat sedan, Arteon, and potentially the Touareg in 2026. VW’s T-Roc Cabriolet will also leave the lineup in 2027.

The ID.5 shares a platform with Ford’s revived Capri electric crossover. Ford has already reduced Capri production in response to weakening EV demand in Europe.

New EV Models Still in the Pipeline

Despite culling the ID.5, Volkswagen will continue to expand its EV range with more affordable options, including the €25,000 ID.2 launching next year and the €20,000 ID.1 set for 2027.

Crossover Demand Shapes Strategy

VW plans a high-riding ID.2 X derivative to tap into continued strong demand for SUVs and crossovers, which insiders say dominate market preferences.

Broader EV Market Challenges

The ID.5’s fate reflects a cooling EV market in parts of Europe, with several automakers adjusting production and delaying or cancelling planned models to match slower-than-expected adoption rates.
