A 49-year-old Polish man is now in Estonian custody after attempting a highly unusual escape into Russia, by crossing the Narva River on an inflatable air mattress.
From Serbia to Estonia
The man reportedly travelled from Serbia to Estonia before making his way to the Narva River, which forms part of the border between Estonia and Russia.
His chosen method, a simple inflatable mattress, left him exposed and vulnerable to swift detection.
Symbols of Support for Russia
When detained, the man was found carrying items that suggested open support for Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Prosecutors did not confirm the exact objects, but they may have included widely recognised symbols such as the orange-and-black St. George’s ribbon or the letter “Z,” both linked to pro-invasion sentiment.
Security Concerns for the EU
Estonian prosecutor Gardi Anderson stressed the broader implications of the man’s actions. “Joining the army of the Russian Federation indirectly threatens the security of Estonia, as well as all European Union member states,” Anderson said.
The prosecutor’s office feared he might attempt another border crossing if released.
Two Months in Custody
Given the potential risk of escape and his stated intentions, prosecutors requested that the man be held for two months.
The Viru District Court approved the request, ensuring he will remain in detention while the investigation continues.
Joining a Foreign Army is a Crime
Marta Tuul, spokesperson for the Estonian Internal Security Service, reminded the public that participating in a foreign country’s military operations is a criminal offence under Estonian law.
She noted that stopping the man could have prevented harm to Ukrainian civilians.
The Narva River Border
The Estonian-Russian border stretches nearly 340 kilometres, with 76 kilometres running along the Narva River.
This stretch of water has seen numerous illegal crossing attempts over the years, though few as unconventional as this one.

While the man’s attempt was foiled, his case highlights the ideological divides and personal motivations that continue to spill across national borders amid the war in Ukraine.
