Tensions are rising in Europe following sightings of drones in the sky

Ukraine’s daily battle against drones

Near Kherson, just 30 kilometers from Russian-occupied territory, Ukrainian soldiers are locked in a daily struggle to intercept enemy drones.

The threat is constant. “The sound of Russian drones is constantly above our heads,” Danish TV 2’s reporter, Claus Borg Reinholdt, who visited the frontline with a Ukrainian unit, says.

An old Soviet system, still defending the skies

The soldiers rely on a Soviet-era air defense vehicle equipped with radar and missile launchers.

It may look outdated, but it remains a vital tool in Ukraine’s defense strategy.

The system receives drone coordinates from a central command, allowing soldiers to target and fire with surprising accuracy.

34,000 Russian drones so far this year

The scale of the drone threat is staggering. Ukraine’s air force estimates that Russia has sent more than 34,000 drones into Ukrainian airspace in 2025 alone.

From surveillance to kamikaze strikes, these drones are shaping modern warfare—and overwhelming defenders.

High costs, high stakes

The vehicle the soldiers use costs around $10 million, while each missile they fire is worth roughly $55,000.

Despite the steep price tag, commanders insist that failing to intercept drones could lead to even more devastating losses in infrastructure, supplies, and civilian lives.

The Ukrainians aren’t just fighting for themselves—they’re sending a warning to other countries, including Denmark.

“Russia is a terror state and a provocateur,” says Oleksiy Boldarev, communications chief for the 38th military district. “They test your strength, find weak spots, and then strike.”

Build a digital wall, urges Kherson governor

Kherson’s governor, Oleksandr Prokudin, tells TV 2 that every country near Russia should build a radio-electronic wall a defense system to detect and neutralize drones before they can strike.

“Denmark needs this wall, and a protective dome for its critical infrastructure”, he insists.

Electronic warfare is the future

Prokudin emphasizes that drone warfare is no longer theoretical. Ukraine is already building electronic defenses to jam or destroy incoming drones.

But physical weapons are also essential. “You must have anti-air missiles to shoot drones down the moment they cross the border,” he says.

Russia is testing western defenses

According to Reinholdt, both the governor and soldiers believe Russia is actively testing NATO and EU countries. “We don’t know for sure if Russian drones entered Danish airspace—but that’s the direction war is going. It’s a preview of what’s coming,” he warns.

Drone attacks are the new normal

President Zelenskyy recently declared, “We are living in a drone reality.” His words reflect a grim truth: drones are no longer limited to the battlefield. From sabotage to surveillance, they represent a new kind of low-cost, high-impact threat that’s hard to defend against.

Ukraine’s message is clear: Act now

Ukraine’s front-line troops are urging the West not to wait.

Drone warfare is here—and spreading. Reinholdt says.
