Russian hackers have performed a massive cyberattack targeting data systems of the UK Ministry of Defense, The Mail on Sunday reports.

According to the newspaper, the hackers stole hundreds of military documents containing sensitive data, including details about eight RAF and Royal Navy bases. The stolen documents also included names and emails of MoD staff members, and the information has since been published on the dark web.

The UK Ministry of Defense said it is actively investigating the attack.

F-35 and possibly nukes exposed

The Lynx group is believed to have carried out the operation, which allowed the hackers to circumvent the cyber defenses of the Armed Forces and gain access to a cache of files.

The leaked documents allegedly disclose information about several sensitive sites, including RAf Lakenheath. This is where the US Air Force’s F-35 jets are based, and it is also believed to be where US nuclear bombs are stored.

Internal email guidance and security instructions were also among the leaked materials. This information could be exploited to create highly convincing phishing attacks, potentially creating an even bigger data breach.

Expert: An “embarrasment” to Britain’s allies

The Mail on Sunday spoke to Professor Anthony Glees, security and defence expert from University of Buckingham, and he didn’t mince words when describing the reported attack:

“This is a massive national security breach, and it’s a double-headed breach, because it not only is about data of great importance to Britain’s enemies and potential enemies, but it is also an embarrassment to Britain’s allies, in particular the US.”

The Lynx group allegedly got access to the data through the systems of the Dodd Group, a major building and maintenance contractor.
