According to The Express, Washington fears the security situation could deteriorate further in the coming days.

Evacuation warning

The US Embassy in Iran has instructed all American citizens to leave the country immediately.
Officials cited protests that are intensifying nationwide and could turn violent, with arrests and injuries already reported.

US citizens have been advised to exit Iran by land routes into Armenia or Turkey, if it is safe.

The State Department warned that travel inside the country is becoming increasingly difficult.

“Increased security measures, road closures, public transportation disruptions, and internet blockages are ongoing,” the department said on its website.

Travel and safety risks

The State Department said Iranian authorities have restricted access to mobile, landline and national internet networks.

Airlines have also limited or cancelled flights, with several suspending services until Friday, January 16.

For Americans unable to leave, officials advised remaining indoors in secure locations.

They recommended keeping water, medications and other essentials readily available.

The warning also stressed that US-Iranian dual nationals must leave Iran using Iranian passports.

Detention fears

The US government cautioned that Iran does not recognise dual nationality.
“US nationals are at significant risk of questioning, arrest, and detention in Iran,” the State Department said.

It added that showing a US passport or demonstrating links to the United States could be enough to prompt detention.
As a result, dual nationals are treated solely as Iranian citizens by the authorities.

The alert underscores longstanding concerns over the treatment of foreign nationals during periods of unrest.

Political tensions rise

The evacuation order followed comments by President Donald Trump, who said Iran wanted to negotiate with Washington.

Speaking aboard Air Force One on Sunday night, Trump said Iranian leaders had contacted him and “they want to negotiate”.

He added that “a meeting is being set up” but warned: “we may have to act because of what’s happening before the meeting.”
Iran has previously threatened swift retaliation if the US launches strikes.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the situation was “under total control” during a briefing with foreign ambassadors.

Meanwhile, protests have continued for weeks, with reports cited by The Express suggesting hundreds have been killed and thousands detained.
