State media showed Kim observing troops taking part in unusual demonstrations involving strength, pain tolerance and combat drills, according to reporting by The Sun.
The footage, broadcast by Korean Central Television, captured soldiers breaking bricks with their heads and smashing concrete slabs without protective gear.
Brutal display
According to The Sun, topless troops were seen striking each other with tools including shovels and axes.
Some soldiers absorbed blows to their bare bodies, while others had wooden sticks broken across their backs..
In one sequence, a man lay still as slabs were placed on him and smashed with a sledgehammer.

Leader reacts
Kim appeared visibly pleased throughout the demonstration, smiling, clapping and encouraging the troops.
According to The Sun, the footage showed him reacting enthusiastically as the drills unfolded.
At the end of the event, soldiers gathered around him, shaking his hand and celebrating together.
“All the participants broke into enthusiastic cheers, looking up to the ever-victorious, iron-willed brilliant commander who is ushering in a great heyday of building a powerful army with his outstanding military strategic ideology and extraordinary commanding art,” said the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
