A deepening partnership between Pyongyang and Moscow is raising new geopolitical questions.
Recent statements suggest their cooperation could extend well beyond the fight in Ukraine, reports Digi24.ro.
Growing alliance
North Korea has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Russia on the global stage.
According to Digi24, citing state media KCNA, Kim Jong-un said Pyongyang would continue backing Moscow’s policies.
“The North Korean government will continue to fully support Russia’s policies of defending its sovereignty, territorial integrity and security interests,” Kim said.
The statement came during a ceremony marking North Korean soldiers who died while fighting alongside Russian forces.
War involvement
The relationship has been strengthened through direct military cooperation.
According to Digi24, around 14,000 North Korean troops were deployed to support Russian operations, particularly in the Kursk region.
Officials from Ukraine and Western countries estimate that thousands of those soldiers suffered heavy casualties.
Kim praised the troops, saying they had “destroyed the aggressors” and resisted Western influence.
Future planning
Discussions between Russian and North Korean officials indicate plans for continued cooperation.
According to Digi24, Russia’s defence minister Andrei Belousov agreed with Pyongyang on a long-term military framework.
A five-year cooperation plan covering 2027 to 2031 is expected to be signed later this year.
Analysts say this suggests both countries are preparing for collaboration after the war ends.
Strategic shift
Experts believe the partnership could evolve into a more formal alliance.
According to Digi24, Professor Lim Eul-chul said the agreement signals a move toward lasting political and military alignment.
He noted it raises the possibility of an “institutional alliance” beyond wartime cooperation.
The countries had already signed a strategic partnership treaty in 2024 that includes mutual defence elements.
Broader ties
Beyond military support, the relationship includes economic and technological exchanges.
According to Digi24, Pyongyang has received assistance from Russia in return for troops and ammunition.
High-level meetings and symbolic events have reinforced the partnership.
Kim has also used memorials and ceremonies to elevate the role of North Korean soldiers in the conflict.
