Explosions were reported near Moscow overnight after Ukrainian drones allegedly targeted a Russian military logistics facility in Russia’s Moscow Oblast.
The strike came as tensions escalated over competing ceasefire proposals between Kyiv and Moscow ahead of Russia’s Victory Day celebrations.
Deep inside Russia
According to the Kyiv Independent, citing Russian social media reports and independent Telegram outlet Exilenova Plus, drones struck the Nara production and logistics complex in Naro-Fominsk.
The facility is believed to support Russian military supply operations. Naro-Fominsk is located around 70 kilometers southwest of Moscow.
The reports could not be independently verified.
Ceasefire dispute
The reported attack happened days after Ukraine announced a ceasefire beginning May 6.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia violated the truce more than 1,800 times within hours of it taking effect. Kyiv later rejected Moscow’s proposed Victory Day ceasefire linked to May 9 events.
Russia had previously announced a temporary pause in fighting during the celebrations.
Expanding campaign
Ukraine has increasingly targeted infrastructure deep inside Russian territory. Oil depots, refineries and military logistics facilities have all been hit in recent months.
Earlier this month, Ukrainian strikes reportedly targeted the Tuapse oil refinery in southern Russia for the fourth time in weeks.
Kyiv argues that energy and transport infrastructure directly support Russia’s war effort and remain legitimate military targets.
Pressure on Moscow
Ukrainian officials say long-range drone and missile attacks are intended to weaken Russia’s military capabilities far from the battlefield.
Zelensky recently confirmed strikes on military production facilities inside Russia, including sites linked to weapons manufacturing.
The growing reach of Ukrainian drones has increased pressure on the Kremlin, particularly with attacks occurring close to Moscow.
Bigger picture
The latest reported strike highlights how fragile ceasefire efforts remain as both sides continue military operations despite public discussions around temporary pauses in fighting.
Long-range attacks and cross-border strikes have intensified in recent weeks. Civilian casualties have also continued on both sides.
The developments underline the widening scope of the war as Ukraine continues targeting strategic infrastructure deep inside Russian territory ahead of Russia’s Victory Day events.
