Why BMW’s Engine?
The B48 is versatile, working in both longitudinal and transverse layouts. That flexibility would allow Mercedes to fit it into a broad range of compact and mid-size models.
Mercedes’ Own Engine Trouble
Mercedes recently launched its own four-cylinder, the M252. But reports suggest it isn’t suited for plug-in hybrid tech, making it less future-proof.
Tariff Troubles
Another factor: the M252 is built in China. For U.S.-bound cars, that could mean steep tariffs. A BMW partnership could avoid that problem with local production.
