Toyota has proven that cheap cars still exist—at least in Japan.

The new Toyota Probox is now available for just 1.5 million yen ($10,600), making it one of the most affordable brand-new cars on the market.

If that sounds unbelievable, it’s because prices like this haven’t been seen in countries like the U.S. or Denmark for years.

In comparison, the cheapest new car in the U.S., the Mitsubishi Mirage, starts at $17,790—nearly 70% more expensive than the Probox.

This was reported by Autobild.

Why is the Probox so cheap?

First off, it’s an old model—the Probox has been around since 2002 and received a facelift in 2014.

Secondly, the car offers minimal technology. The interior lacks modern features, with hard plastic surfaces, no large screens, and small buttons instead of touch panels.

Despite these limitations, Toyota keeps prices low, making the Probox a popular choice in Japan for businesses and budget-conscious buyers.

The Top Model Still Costs Less Than $14,000

Even the fully loaded Probox—which costs $14,000 (2 million yen)—is cheaper than most used cars in the U.S..

For that price, buyers get air conditioning, remote central locking, heated seats, electric windows, radio, LED headlights, and navigation.

Surprisingly, safety features aren’t ignored.

Even the base model includes lane-keeping assist and automatic emergency braking.

The Probox isn’t built for speed, but it does offer two engine choices:

  • 1.3L gasoline engine

  • 1.5L gasoline engine (with up to 109 horsepower)

  • Optional four-wheel drive (only available on the top model)

While Toyota sells the Probox at a budget price in Japan, it’s unlikely to come to international markets like the U.S. or Europe. Strict safety and emissions regulations would require modifications that would drive up the price, making it less competitive outside Japan.
