Used Car Expert Advises Against These Engines

Used car expert Benny Christensen from NAF (Norwegian Automobile Federation) warns against certain engines that can lead to costly repairs over time. This list is based on a study from Sweden’s largest automotive magazine, Vi Bilägare (Car owners).
The Most Problematic Engine

The 1.2 PureTech engine from Peugeot, Citroën, and Opel is a three-cylinder gasoline engine that frequently experiences serious issues. It is notorious for excessive oil consumption and problems with the timing belt, which can actually disintegrate over time.
“It’s not a question of if it will break down – but when.” – Benny Christensen told motor.nu.
Volkswagen 1.4 TSI Twincharger

This engine was introduced in 2005 with both a turbocharger and a supercharger, making it highly advanced. It can be found in models like the Golf, Touran, and Tiguan. However, it has shown significant flaws over time, including poorly designed piston rings, excessive oil consumption, and issues with the timing chain.
Ford 1.0 EcoBoost

This small yet powerful three-cylinder engine won “Engine of the Year” three years in a row. However, if a timing belt replacement is needed, it can cost up to $3,000 and take at least six hours to complete. Additionally, many owners have reported that the turbo coolant pipe is prone to rusting.
BMW/PSA 1.6 Prince

This collaboration between BMW and Peugeot/Citroën resulted in a four-cylinder gasoline engine that won multiple awards. Unfortunately, many owners have reported high oil consumption and timing chain issues. If you hear rattling noises from the engine, it could indicate serious problems.
Audi 2.0 TFSI

This engine is used in several VW Group models but is most problematic in Audi vehicles. It has been known for excessive oil consumption and timing chain failures.
BMW N47 (Diesel)

This four-cylinder diesel engine, launched in 2007, was praised for its fuel efficiency. However, many owners have reported that the timing chain can stretch and eventually snap, leading to sudden engine failure.
Four More Problematic Engines

Christensen also points out that several other engines have significant reliability issues:
-
1.2 TSI (VW, 2006-2012) – Major timing chain issues.
-
2.0 TDI (VW/Audi) – Extremely high oil consumption.
-
1.8 Gasoline (Audi/VW) – Also known for excessive oil consumption.
-
1.8 Gasoline (Rover 75, MGF, Freelander) – Chronic head gasket issues.
Think Twice Before Buying

If you’re considering purchasing a used car with one of these engines, it’s crucial to research its history and known issues. Get documentation for any repairs and be thorough in your assessment.
Service History Matters

A good service record can extend an engine’s lifespan, but a poorly designed engine will still face issues over time. Proper maintenance may delay problems, but it won’t prevent them entirely.
Warranty and Claims

Many used cars are sold with third-party warranties, but these often exclude known engine defects. Sellers frequently attribute failures to normal wear and tear, even when the issues are excessive.
