Roughly 50,000 smoke detectors are being recalled after officials found they could fail to detect smoke or carbon monoxide, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The malfunction poses a serious danger, increasing the risk of smoke inhalation, carbon monoxide poisoning, or even death.

So far, no injuries have been reported, but the potential danger is significant enough to trigger this large-scale recall.

Which Detectors are Affected?

The recall covers the Apollo America Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors with model number “51000-600” printed on the back.

The affected units also have “replace by” dates ranging from June 2034 to October 2034.

The faulty devices were sold through Vivint’s website, as well as through door-to-door and telephone sales by Vivint, between June and October 2024.

They were priced between $50 and $100.

What to Do if You Own One

If you own one of these detectors:

  • Check the model number and “replace by” date printed on the back.
  • If it matches, stop using the device immediately.
  • Contact Vivint for a free replacement.

Even if your detector isn’t affected by this recall, safety experts recommend checking your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors regularly to ensure they are functioning properly.

Replace batteries as needed and follow manufacturer guidelines for replacement timelines.
