If you’re not getting enough rest, the caffeine in coffee might not be sufficient to mask the tiredness. Your body produces adenosine, a chemical responsible for making you feel sleepy, and while caffeine can temporarily block its effects, it can’t combat severe sleep deprivation.

Another factor could be how your body processes caffeine.
