Summer vacations often involve a refreshing dip in the pool. But did you know you might be swimming in more than just chlorinated water?

When the sun is out, it’s tempting to slide into a cool pool. Most people picture crystal-clear water, free of bacteria and impurities.

Especially on hot days, when you’ve been lounging on an air mattress for hours, the trip to the toilet can feel like too much effort.

Children Get the Blame—But Adults Are Worse

Many assume it’s the kids who can’t hold it while playing in the water.

But adults aren’t much better.

According to a new Danish survey, one in six adults—that’s 17 percent—admit to peeing in the pool.

By comparison, only 7 percent say their children have done the same.

Some adults simply can’t be bothered to find a toilet.

According to travel insurance expert Louise Hertzum Andersen, it often comes down to laziness and a lack of respect for fellow swimmers.

Yes, It Matters—Even with Chlorine

Some may shrug it off, thinking chlorine handles everything. That’s only partly true.

Chlorine does help break down bacteria and neutralize urine, but experts emphasize that peeing in the pool is still a bad habit.

After all, no one wants to swim in someone else’s waste.

Experts recommend always using the toilet before swimming, rinsing off after pool time, and avoiding swallowing pool water.
