A Russian drone struck a civilian freight train in Donetsk Oblast on May 12, injuring the train’s driver, Ukrainian Railways reported via Telegram.
The attack came just as Ukraine and its European allies called for a 30-day unconditional truce, set to begin the same day.
“Truce proposals are being ignored, attacks on railway infrastructure continue,” the national railway company stated on Telegram.
The injured driver suffered a shrapnel wound to his leg, but his life is not in danger. Despite the incident, railway traffic continued uninterrupted.

The statement emphasized that railway infrastructure has played a crucial role during Russia’s full-scale invasion and has repeatedly come under attack.
On May 11, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he would travel to Turkey on May 15, saying, “We expect [Vladimir] Putin,” and once again urging Russia to agree to a ceasefire.
“We expect a ceasefire from tomorrow — this proposal is on the table. A complete and unconditional ceasefire — long-term, to provide the necessary basis for diplomacy — could bring peace much closer,” he added in a separate statement.
Despite growing pressure, Moscow has not agreed to Ukraine’s proposed ceasefire. Instead,
Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that direct peace talks begin in Istanbul on May 15. The Kremlin has yet to respond to Zelensky’s invitation for a face-to-face meeting.
