Haiti’s capital remains a battleground. In just two days, more than 100 suspected gang members have been killed by explosive drones launched in targeted strikes around Port-au-Prince, according to the National Human Rights Defense Network (RNDDH).

Authorities say the new drone campaign is part of a broader government crackdown to weaken criminal groups that now control up to 85% of the city.

A New Phase in the Fight Against Gangs

As reported by 20minutos, the drones were deployed by a special task force created by Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime in March.

One of the heaviest hits came at an abandoned school called Maranatha, long used as a gang base by groups including Gran Ravine and Village de Dieu.

While the strikes have eliminated scores of foot soldiers, no major gang leaders have been confirmed among the dead.

Still, their impact is being felt: known gang chiefs have complained on social media, and several have lost key lieutenants.

Barbecue’s Network Weakens

Among the most affected is the Vivre Ensemble coalition led by Jimmy Cherisier, better known as “Barbecue.” His group, once thought to be untouchable, has reportedly suffered extensive losses among its ranks.

These so-called “suicide drones” have proven effective in areas where traditional law enforcement methods fail, especially in hard-to-reach gang strongholds.

Some Signs of Calm Return

In recent weeks, the Haitian National Police has intensified operations in and around Port-au-Prince, including the hillside district of Kenscoff. As a result, some neighborhoods have reported resumed commercial and school activity for the first time in months.

Vithelhomme Innocent, leader of the Tabarre gang near the U.S. Embassy, has reportedly evaded police capture several times but remains a key target.

Security forces are now maintaining pressure through continuous tactical raids.

A Deadly Year

Despite recent gains, Haiti remains engulfed in violence. According to the United Nations, at least 5,626 people were killed across the country in 2024—1,000 more than the year prior. Another 2,213 were injured and 1,494 kidnapped.

In just the first quarter of this year, 1,617 deaths were recorded due to clashes involving gangs, local militias, and police.
