Tensions are rising over shipments linked to the war in Ukraine.

New scrutiny is falling on trade routes that may be helping fund the conflict, reports United24 Media.

Sanctions considered

The European Union is weighing sanctions against individuals suspected of facilitating the transport of Ukrainian grain allegedly taken by Russia, according to United24Media, citing Haaretz.

The grain is believed to have been shipped to Israel’s port of Haifa using vessels linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet.”

EU response

EU foreign affairs spokesperson Anouar El Anouni said the bloc is reviewing the reports and monitoring the situation closely.

“The European Union has taken note of the reports that a Russian shadow fleet vessel carrying stolen Ukrainian grain has been allowed to unload at Haifa port in Israel, and that despite previous contacts of Ukraine with Israeli authorities on the subject,” he told Haaretz.

He added the EU is ready to impose sanctions on individuals or entities involved if they are found to be supporting Russia’s war effort or bypassing restrictions.

Ukraine protests

Kyiv has reacted strongly to the developments.

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry summoned Israeli Ambassador Michael Brodsky to issue a formal protest after a vessel believed to be carrying grain from occupied territories docked in Haifa.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha warned that continued trade involving such cargo could damage relations between the two countries.

Repeat incidents

This is the second reported case of a ship linked to Russian-controlled grain arriving at the Israeli port.

Earlier in April, Ukraine requested clarification after another vessel was suspected of transporting grain taken from occupied regions.

Legal concerns

Ukrainian officials and Israeli media have raised concerns that such shipments could violate international law.

The Ukrainian Embassy in Israel described the situation as a potential breach of sovereignty and called for further investigation.

The issue highlights growing international attention on trade routes tied to Russia’s war economy.
