The woman killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent has been identified as Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident and U.S. citizen.

Her mother, Donna Ganger, said she was informed of her daughter’s death on the morning of Jan. 7, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune.

“Renee was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known,” Ganger told the newspaper. “She was extremely compassionate… She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.”

City Council member Jason Chavez described Good as “an observer … watching out for our immigrant neighbors,” ABC News reported.

What happened

Good was fatally shot during an ICE enforcement operation after officials said a group of people began blocking agents. According to ABC News, citing city officials, she suffered gunshot wounds to the head and later died at a local hospital.

Witness Emily Heller told NBC News she saw agents approach Good’s vehicle after asking her to move. “They went up to her car and started trying to open her door,” Heller said.

“And as she was trying to move forward, one of the ICE agents stepped in front of her vehicle and reached across the hood and fired his weapon about three or four times and shot her in the face,” she added.

Heller said Good’s vehicle struck other cars and a post before stopping. “This was horrific and will change my life forever,” she said.

Official response

Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said the driver “weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers.” She said the agent fired while “fearing for his life.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey rejected that account, accusing federal agents of recklessness. “This was a federal agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying,” he said at a news conference.

Family impact

Good had previously been married to Timmy Ray Macklin Jr., who died in 2023, the Star Tribune reported. The couple share a six-year-old child.

“There’s nobody else in his life,” Macklin’s father said. “I’ll drive. I’ll fly. To come and get my grandchild.”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said he has issued a “warning order” to prepare the National Guard and urged “peaceful resistance.”
