What is happening?
Since a surprise attack launched by Israel on Iranian targets, the sides have attacked each other several times during the weekend.
Full aerial control
Monday, Brigadier General Effie Defrin, spokesperson for the Israeli Military, said at a media briefing, that Israel has not achieved “full aerial control above Tehran”.
1/3 of SSM’s destroyed
Defrin also said, that Israel has managed to destroy one third of Iran’s Surface-to-Surface missile (SSM’s) launchers.
In total, Israel claims to have destroyed 120 missile launchers since it launched its initial attack late last week.
“Minutes before” firing
Defrin added that the Israeli air force destroyed more than 20 missile launchers last night alone, “minutes before” they were used to send missiles towards Israel.
Done in four days
Achieving full aerial control of a strategically important area of a conflict is paramount to your chances of succeeding, and if Israel’s claims are true, they will have managed just that in four days.
What Putin can’t do
Russia launched it’s invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago, and embarassingly for Putin, Russia has still not been able to achieve aerial superiority in Ukraine.

According to a report published in March 2025 from the UK Ministry of Defence, Russia has both the technological and numerical advantage over Ukraine in the battle for air superiority, so why can’t they succeed?
