Now, one of America’s most famous venues faces a sudden crisis that could lock its doors this week.
Edge of ruin
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is staring down a catastrophic financial cliff in Washington. Right now, according to The Washington Post, leaked documents reveal the venue is facing a “certain fiscal collapse” that requires immediate action.
A massive report went out to the board of trustees ahead of an emergency meeting. Tuesday’s gathering will be critical. The situation looks so grim that officials might recommend shutting the main building down immediately.
They also worry about covering basic expenses. The 57-page document warns that the center might not even make payroll “within a matter of weeks” without a major cash injection.
A controversial lifeline
Center officials have come up with a highly political survival plan. They want the board to publicly embrace President Donald Trump, who took over as chairman of the institution a year ago.
The internal memo suggests that asking the president for help is the only real way out according to the Irish Star. The document claims Trump offered to “raise the necessary funds to keep the Center from bankruptcy” during its current renovation project.
But the cash comes with strings attached. The president reportedly wants “appropriate recognition” in exchange for his fundraising efforts.
Trustees will review ten different options for adding text to the outside of the building. One suggested phrase reads: “Renovation Restoration and Endowment overseen by President Donald J. Trump and the Trump Kennedy Center Fund.”
Changing fortunes
This push for new signage follows a rocky year for the venue. The Washington Post noted earlier this year that both donations and ticket sales actually fell after Trump first added his name to the building in December.
Leadership turnover hit the venue hard recently. Through all the chaos, the president’s defenders claim his role is absolutely essential.
A spokesperson blamed the old executives for the financial mess. The communications team insists the current chairman successfully attracted fresh donors to the historic site.
