Marines will be deployed in LA within two days – and they will have authority to detain citizens

What is happening?

Wednesday, Los Angeles endured it’s sixth day of protests, and where most of the protests have been largely peaceful, some have decended into violence.

National Guard

Saturday, a day after the protests started, President Donald Trump called in the National Guard to LA.

Initially 2000 members of the National Guard was sent to LA, but later another 2000 members were added.

According to Reuters, officials said Wednesday, that US Marines will now join the National Guard in the streets of LA within two days – and they will be authorized to detain civilians, until police arrive to make arrests.

Specific training

A batallion of 700 Marines has conducted training specific the to situation in LA, US Military said Wednesday.

Their objective will be to protect federal officers and property, not to conduct civilian policing.

Trump: “Los Angeles would be burning”

President Trump has said:

“If I didn’t act quicly on that (the riots), Los Angeles would be burning to the ground right now.”

But that claim is heavily disputed by the Governor of California.

California suing Trump

The Governor, Gavin Newsom, has repeatedly said that he do not want the National Guard in Los Angeles, and that local authorities will be able to manage the situation.

Following Trumps deployment of the National Guard, Newson and the State of California has sued both Trump and the Defense Department to put a stop to the deployment.

Why are people protesting?

The reason for the protests is a series of immigration raids being conducted as part of Trumps election promise to deport immigrants.

The protests have since spread nationwide with more than 1800 anti-Trump demonstrations planned all over the country this Saturday.
