Millions of popular travel containers have been pulled from the market following reports of serious injuries. Safety officials warn a design flaw could pose a significant risk to users.
The recall affects widely sold products used by consumers for years.
Safety alert issued
According to The Express, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled more than eight million Thermos-branded travel mugs.
The warning centres on a defect that can cause the lid stopper to eject forcefully when opened.
Officials say pressure may build up inside the container, leading to the stopper being expelled with significant force.
The issue has been linked to models lacking a pressure relief mechanism.
Injury reports
The manufacturer has received at least 27 reports of incidents involving the faulty lids.
Some users suffered cuts and impact injuries that required medical attention.
The recall notice states: “Three consumers suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye”.
Authorities have classified the issue as a serious safety risk due to the potential for severe harm.
Affected products
Two main product lines are included in the recall: Stainless King food jars and Sportsman bottles.
Around 5.8 million food jars and 2.3 million bottles are impacted.
Specific models include Stainless King Food Jars (16oz SK3000 and 24oz SK3020) made before July 2023, and the Sportsman Food and Beverage Bottle (40oz SK3010).
The items were sold at major retailers such as Walmart and Target, as well as online via Amazon, between March 2008 and July 2024.
What consumers should do
Customers are urged to stop using the affected products immediately.
Thermos is offering free replacements, with instructions varying depending on the model.
Some users may need to dispose of the stopper and provide photographic proof, while others will be asked to return the product using a prepaid label.
The company advises customers to contact its support services or website for further guidance.
