Obama wasted no time mocking him.

A single campaign trail joke can sometimes hit harder than a long policy speech.

Politicians spend months crafting attacks on the economy, only to watch a throwaway line about interior design steal the spotlight.

Now, a passing remark about a casual dining chain has sparked a week of political theatre in Washington.

A gold-plated nerve

According to HuffPost, former President Barack Obama used a Wednesday campaign stop in Morrow, Georgia, to mock the White House over its reaction to a one-liner he delivered last Saturday.

At that earlier event, Obama joked that President Donald Trump’s gold-heavy White House makeover made the residence look like “Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.” The quip triggered days of outrage from Republican officials.

On Monday, Trump pushed back directly against his predecessor’s critique. “I’ve taken care of the White House,” Trump said, as reported by HuffPost. “I fixed it with the finest artisans in the world. We re-skinned it; it was in horrible shape.”

Speaking to the Georgia crowd on Wednesday, Obama pointed out what the administration chose to ignore from his weekend speech. He noted that officials never pushed back against his claims about rising living costs, tariffs hurting families, or government corruption.

“The president wasn’t even mad about the Saddam Hussein comparison. That part didn’t bother him. But he was very upset about the Cheesecake Factory comment,” Obama said. “He took great umbrage. He said I didn’t understand the work of the artisans in the White House. …They mobilized a whole-of-government response to that joke, not to inflation, but to that joke.”

Dining out drama

The pushback went well beyond the Oval Office. On Monday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent actually travelled to a Cheesecake Factory location to praise the restaurant chain in front of reporters, HuffPost reported.

Obama wasted no time mocking that cabinet-level field trip. “The guy who’s supposed to be figuring out how to lower inflation. And reduce interest rates. They told him he should hold a press conference in front of the Cheesecake Factory,” Obama quipped.

Meanwhile, right-wing pundits accused the former president of looking down on everyday Americans. On X, CNN contributor Scott Jennings wrote: “Has never been in a Cheesecake Factory. Undefeated at condescending to regular folks.”

Obama brushed off the snobbery claims on Wednesday by pointing to his years raising two daughters. “I lived at Chuck E. Cheese and California Pizza Kitchen and the Cheesecake Factory. That was my jam for about a decade,” Obama said.
