Poland has offered to build a “small city” to host permanent US troops as Warsaw seeks clarity over Washington’s military commitments in Europe.

Poland has proposed building extensive new infrastructure to host American troops permanently amid uncertainty surrounding future US military deployments in Europe.
The offer comes after confusion triggered by changes to planned troop rotations under the Trump administration.

Polish proposal

According to Digi24, citing TVP World and The Washington Times, Poland offered to construct facilities capable of supporting a long-term US military presence.

Deputy Defence Minister Paweł Zalewski said the project would include housing and services for both soldiers and their families.

“We will have to build a small city, with a completely autonomous infrastructure for this permanent presence,” Zalewski said.

“We are ready to do that,” he added.

Troop confusion

The proposal followed uncertainty after US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly cancelled a planned rotation of 4,000 American troops.

According to Digi24, President Donald Trump later reversed the decision and announced plans to send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland.

The sudden policy changes reportedly caused concern among NATO allies and US lawmakers.

Zalewski said Warsaw sought clarification from Washington regarding future American military commitments in the region.

NATO concerns

“We focused on clarifying the situation because we were confused,” Zalewski told The Washington Times.

He said discussions between the two allies were expected to continue over several weeks.

Poland currently hosts around 10,000 US troops as part of America’s broader military presence in Europe.

The country has become one of NATO’s key eastern flank states following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Europe’s security role

Trump has repeatedly argued that European NATO members should take greater responsibility for their own defence.

According to Digi24, the US president has previously criticised European allies for relying too heavily on Washington’s military support.

Despite concerns over troop movements, Zalewski said US officials assured Poland that American commitments to the country would not be weakened.

The discussions come amid broader debates about NATO readiness and long-term US military strategy in Europe.
