Aston Villa’s return to European glory sparked emotional scenes in Istanbul on Wednesday night, with lifelong supporter Prince William among those celebrating after the club lifted the Europa League trophy for the first time.
Villa swept aside Freiburg 3-0 at Besiktas Park to secure their biggest continental success since winning the European Cup in 1982. Tears were visible from several supporters inside the stadium after the final whistle, including the Prince of Wales, who has openly followed the Birmingham club for years.
Villa dominate European final
Unai Emery’s side controlled the match from the opening stages and never allowed Freiburg to settle during the German club’s first-ever European final.
Youri Tielemans opened the scoring before Emi Buendia and Morgan Rogers completed the victory in front of thousands of travelling Villa supporters.
Captain John McGinn later became only the second Aston Villa skipper to lift a major European trophy.
Morgan Rogers also entered the record books after becoming the youngest player ever to both score and provide an assist in a Europa League final.
Prince William celebrates online
Prince William reacted publicly shortly after the match ended, praising players, staff and supporters following the historic night in Turkey.
“Amazing night!! Huge congratulations to all the players, team, staff and everyone connected to the club! 44 years since the last taste of European silverware!” William wrote on X.
“Special shout out to Boubacar Kamara who has been out injured but is such an integral part of our team and helped lay the foundations of this success. UTV! VTID W”
Images from inside the stadium showed the prince visibly emotional as Villa closed in on victory during the second half.
McGinn jokes about celebrating with William
Villa captain John McGinn later spoke to Express about Prince William’s support during a post-match interview with TNT Sports.
McGinn described the future king as approachable and down-to-earth despite his royal status.
“He’s just a normal guy,” McGinn said while discussing meetings with William over the years.
Scottish midfielder McGinn also joked that he hoped the prince would help cover celebrations after the final.
“I hope he gets his credit card out to pay for a few drinks,” he added.
Emery adds another European triumph
Victory delivered a fifth Europa League title for Unai Emery, extending his remarkable record in the competition after previous triumphs with Sevilla and Villarreal.
Aston Villa have experienced a dramatic transformation since Emery arrived at Villa Park in 2022. Relegation concerns during previous seasons have now been replaced by Champions League qualification and European silverware.
Celebrations continued long after the final whistle as Villa supporters marked a trophy drought stretching back more than four decades.
