He calls it an “unpleasant fact” and wants the public to realize that the threat is real.

When global conflicts stretch into years rather than months, the initial bravado often gives way to a much harsher reality.

While official statements usually maintain a sense of confidence, voices from within the fray sometimes offer a far more pessimistic outlook on where the struggle is actually heading.

A grim outlook

The ongoing military situation is rapidly moving toward a significant Russian failure, according to a recent assessment by the pro-war blogger Igor Strelkov.

The prominent figure shared his dark predictions on his official Telegram channel following reports of new financial support for Ukraine.

Dialog.UA reported that Strelkov believes the current path is unsustainable for the Russian population. He noted that the conflict has dragged on for years without any clear objectives being established or met by the leadership.

The situation has now reached what he describes as a dead end. In his own words, Strelkov wrote that the current military operation is “currently claiming a huge number of lives without achieving any results.”

Facing the facts

The reality of the battlefield is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore for those watching closely. Strelkov urged his followers to be honest about the precarious position the country now finds itself in as international support for its opponent grows.

“Unfortunately, we are heading for military defeat. That’s a fact,” Strelkov stated in his post. He suggested that it is time to acknowledge this unpleasant reality rather than continuing to ignore the looming threat.

He also pointed out that while Ukraine continues to receive the supplies it needs, Russia has failed to take serious steps to counter that momentum. This imbalance is creating a scenario that he described as desperate.

Technological shifts

Modern warfare has changed the rules of engagement, rendering traditional tactics less effective than they once were. The rise of new technology on the front lines has made it difficult for large groups of soldiers to make meaningful progress.

Strelkov highlighted that the conflict has transformed into a drone war. He noted that the opposing side has managed to build such a massive production capacity of missiles and drones that it can hold the entire front line with them.

“Large masses of people and equipment will be destroyed without achieving any success,” Strelkov emphasized. He concluded that because of these technological shifts and a lack of weapons for its own troops, the window for a Russian victory has effectively closed.

Russian gains near zero

In an analysis from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), published on March 31, 2026, the think tank notes that Russian territorial gains in Ukraine have ground to near zero.

According to figures from ISW, Russian forces only managed to gain 5.45 km² in March 2026, compared to 152.4 km² in February and 363.3 km² in January.

Those numbers are in stark contrast to November 2025, when Russian forces managed to gain 794.9 km².
