The latest news from Russia can lead to two possibilities, but both will be concidered af failure, according to expert.
Carefully chosen words from the Kremlin rarely pass unnoticed in Europe. Last week, two separate statements from Moscow immediately triggered speculation among analysts monitoring the war in Ukraine.
Both comments pointed toward something Russia has largely avoided discussing publicly for years: the possibility that the war may eventually end.
New rhetoric from the Kremlin
Russian President Vladimir Putin surprised observers when he suggested the conflict could be approaching a turning point after more than four years of fighting.
“I believe it is heading toward an end, but it is still a serious matter,” Vladimir Putin said regarding the war in Ukraine.
Shortly afterward, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov delivered a message carrying a remarkably similar tone, claiming progress surrounding peace discussions had created optimism inside Moscow.
Russian officials have spent much of the war emphasizing long-term military objectives and refusing to publicly discuss compromise. That shift in language immediately caught the attention of Western analysts.
Expert believes “something has changed”
British Russia expert Keir Giles believes the statements may reflect deeper strategic calculations inside the Kremlin.
“It suggests that something has changed,” said Keir Giles, director of the Conflict Studies Research Centre in the United Kingdom, according to Dagbladet.
According to Giles, two possible explanations could lie behind Moscow’s noticeably softer rhetoric.

Giles argued the more optimistic interpretation is that Putin may finally recognize the limits of Russia’s military campaign.
The expert suggested Moscow could now be interested in freezing the conflict and securing territory already under Russian control rather than continuing a prolonged war indefinitely.
Another possibility, however, involves Donald Trump and the United States.
According to Giles, Ukraine has benefited strategically from Washington’s recent focus on the war involving Iran. That distraction may have reduced pressure on Kyiv while shifting international attention elsewhere.
The analyst believes Putin could now be attempting to pull Trump back into negotiations by presenting the image of possible peace progress.
Trump has repeatedly emphasized his desire to position himself as a leader capable of ending major international conflicts, something Russia may attempt to exploit diplomatically.
War continues despite speculation
Despite the new rhetoric emerging from Moscow, fighting across Ukraine continues.
Russian and Ukrainian forces remain locked in heavy combat while drone strikes and missile attacks persist across multiple regions.
No official peace agreement currently appears close, and Western governments continue expressing skepticism regarding Moscow’s long-term intentions.
Still, the unusual wording from both Putin and Peskov has intensified debate about whether the Kremlin may be preparing for a different phase of the conflict after years of war and mounting pressure on multiple fronts.
