Opportunities to avoid military service in Russia may be shrinking
New restrictions suggest tighter coordination between authorities and fewer ways out for those seeking to evade the draft, reports o2.pl.
Blocked escape route
Russian authorities have reportedly begun restricting conscripts from leaving the country via Belarus, according to 02.pl, citing human rights activists.
The case involves a young man from St. Petersburg who was unable to exit despite attempting multiple routes.
Attempt to flee
After receiving a summons for a medical board in April, the man was flagged in Russia’s electronic conscription system.
Shortly after, he was banned from leaving the country.
He first tried to depart from a Russian airport but was stopped, then attempted to travel through Belarus by train.
Denied departure
According to activists quoted by Siewier.Realii, he was twice refused boarding on flights from Minsk to Tbilisi and Yerevan.
No written explanation was provided, with officials reportedly giving only verbal refusals.
Growing coordination
Human rights groups say this could mark a new phase of cooperation between Russian and Belarusian authorities.
Until now, the land border between the two countries had been seen as one of the last viable escape routes for those avoiding conscription.
Digital control expands
Russia introduced an electronic conscription register in 2024, allowing authorities to issue summonses digitally.
These notices are considered valid even if they are not opened, and the system gathers extensive personal data accessible to security services.
Pressure to enlist
Activists warn that conscripts are increasingly being pressured to sign military contracts.
Such agreements can lead to deployment in the war in Ukraine, raising concerns about coercion and limited options for refusal.
The developments point to a broader tightening of control over military-age citizens.
