Donald Trump promises crushing economic operations against Iran’s allies.

Tensions surrounding global oil shipping lanes expanded dramatically after Washington announced aggressive financial measures aimed at isolating Tehran.

Donald Trump took to social media to outline what he characterized as a comprehensive campaign to sever economic connections to the Iranian regime, warning third-party nations against facilitating commercial transactions.

The announcement follows the expiration of a 60-day ceasefire without a permanent diplomatic agreement, extending the confrontation initiated by U.S. and Israeli military strikes earlier this year.

Unprecedented sanctions threat hits foreign trading partners

Outlining a strict enforcement strategy, Trump warned that foreign institutions providing financial lifelines to Iran will face severe economic blowback.

“ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Calling the initiative an “economic D-Day,” he targeted the secondary markets and clandestine trade routes that keep funds flowing to the country: “Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies – it all needs to stop NOW. You know who you are.”

Gulf allies break ties as Beijing stands firm

Repercussions echoed quickly across the Middle East. The United Arab Emirates severed all financial ties with Iran after its defense ministry reported detecting two Iranian ballistic missiles fired toward regional maritime routes.

Iranian leadership responded promptly, warning neighboring Gulf states that offering assistance to U.S. forces would be viewed as direct collusion. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the latest rhetoric from Washington, writing on X that “doubling down on failed policies will only bring further defeat – and enmity of Iranians.”

Sustained enforcement remains complicated by major international buyers, particularly in China. Chinese officials previously rejected Washington’s targeted sanctions against independent refineries, maintaining that such unilateral measures violate international norms and ordering domestic entities to disregard them.

Interruptions along the Strait of Hormuz continue to disrupt global energy markets, creating domestic political pressure in Washington ahead of upcoming elections.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that economic isolation measures would escalate further, even as separate discussions involving Oman attempt to negotiate the reopening of critical crude oil supply channels.
