As European defense spending surpasses that of the U.S. for the first time since WWII, President Trump reaffirms America’s military commitment to Poland — and hints at deploying even more troops.

Update From Poland

During a joint press conference in Warsaw, U.S. President Donald Trump assured Polish leaders that the United States has no intention of reducing its military presence in Poland.

On the contrary, U.S. is prepared to send additional troops if needed.

“We Will Put More There If They Want Us”

“We will put more there if they want us to,” Trump said, standing alongside newly elected Polish President Karol Nawrocki.

“We haven’t even considered withdrawing troops from Poland. We are reviewing that elsewhere, but with Poland, it’s permanent.”

Trump emphasized the close partnership between Washington and Warsaw, calling it a relationship marked by “great trust” and describing Poland as belonging to a “very special category of countries.”

“American Soldiers Are Part of Our Society”

President Nawrocki welcomed Trump’s remarks.

“This is the first time in the 20th and 21st centuries that Poles are happy to have foreign troops stationed in our country,” Nawrocki said.

“American soldiers are part of our society. We now have nearly 10,000 troops here. It’s a signal to the whole world, and also to Russia, that we are united.”

Poland Boosts Defense Spending

Nawrocki also confirmed that Poland is increasing its defense spending from 4.7% to 5% of GDP, marking the highest level among all NATO member states.

A Strategic and Political Alliance

Trump’s relationship with Poland predates Nawrocki’s presidency.

The Polish leader met with Trump prior to his May 2025 election victory, and leaned heavily on U.S. support during his campaign, including endorsements from prominent American conservatives.

At the CPAC Poland conference earlier this year, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem praised Nawrocki and likened him to Trump, a sign of their close political alignment and shared populist messaging.

Broad Support Across Polish Politics

Trump’s strong endorsement of the US-Polish alliance drew praise from Polish leaders across party lines.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk called the statement a confirmation of the “timeless nature of our alliance,” while Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski emphasized unity on defense matters:

“On security, deterring Putin, and supporting Ukraine, the government, the President, and the opposition speak with one voice.”

Poland as a Key NATO Hub

With nearly 10,000 U.S. troops already stationed in Poland, the country has become a key hub for NATO operations in Eastern Europe.

The American military presence has included rotational deployments, joint training exercises, and the establishment of military infrastructure, all aimed at bolstering deterrence against Russia.

Europe Outspends the U.S. on Defense Procurement

A Response to Russian Aggression

The shift marks a dramatic reversal after decades of American dominance in global defense investment.

European nations have significantly ramped up spending on arms and military equipment in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, signaling a broader and more permanent transformation in the continent’s approach to defense and security.
