Trump accidentally puts his marriage in the spotlight after revealing what Melania supposedly calls him behind closed doors.
President Donald Trump has never been particularly shy about sharing details of his personal life, especially when they provide an opportunity to entertain a crowd.
His wife, Melania Trump, occasionally makes an appearance in those stories, offering a rare glimpse into the couple’s relationship away from the cameras.
But during a campaign rally in Texas on Wednesday, the president shared a detail about their private conversations that quickly attracted attention for reasons he might not have anticipated.
Apparently, even at home, Trump is accustomed to being addressed with a certain degree of formality.
And according to the president himself, his wife is no exception.
Melania apparently has a rather formal nickname
The revelation came while Trump was criticizing James Talarico, the Democratic candidate for the US Senate in Texas.
Trump has repeatedly described Talarico as a vegan, despite the Democrat not actually following a vegan diet.
The president’s pronunciation of the word has also attracted attention.
Rather than saying “vegan,” Trump has frequently pronounced it as “vay-gun,” a habit that comedian Jimmy Kimmel recently mocked on his late-night television show.
During Wednesday’s rally, however, Trump managed to pronounce the word correctly.
He credited Melania with correcting him.
“My wife told me, ‘Sir, do me a favor, you have to do me just a little bit of a favor. It’s not vay-gun, it’s vegan,’” Trump told the audience.
The president then offered his explanation for the mistake.
“How the hell would I know? I like steak!”
But it was not Trump’s dietary preferences that attracted the most attention.
Instead, listeners focused on the way he claimed his wife had addressed him.
Even Melania apparently calls him ‘sir’
Trump’s account suggested that Melania had used the word “sir” while correcting her husband.
For a president accustomed to receiving formal greetings from government officials, military personnel and White House staff, the title is hardly unusual.
Hearing it supposedly come from his own wife, however, prompted a rather different reaction.
The detail was especially striking given Trump’s longstanding habit of recounting conversations in which people address him as “sir.”
Those anecdotes frequently involve people expressing admiration or gratitude toward the president, sometimes with tears in their eyes.
His latest story followed a familiar pattern, although the person supposedly using the honorific was considerably closer to home.
And unlike several of his previous anecdotes, there were no tears involved.
Trump has his own unusual name for Melania
The president’s account also recalled an earlier revelation about how he addresses his wife.
Last year, Trump said he enjoys calling Melania “first lady” because the title reminds him that he is president.
Taken together, the two remarks suggest that formal titles feature rather prominently in the couple’s conversations, at least according to Trump’s public descriptions.
Of course, the president was recounting a conversation rather than providing an independently verified account of how the couple routinely addresses each other.
Whether Melania actually calls her husband “sir” in everyday life remains unclear.
But the anecdote was more than enough to provide social media users with fresh material.
Social media users cannot resist the jokes
Trump’s remarks quickly prompted amused reactions online, with critics questioning the unusually formal way he claimed his wife spoke to him.
One commenter asked “She calls him Sir?” in a post on X.
Another offered a considerably shorter assessment:
“kinky”
The responses reflected the amusement surrounding a detail that had little to do with the political message Trump was attempting to deliver.
His original target had been Talarico, whom he was trying to ridicule over his supposed dietary habits. But the discussion soon shifted away from the Democratic candidate and toward the president’s own marriage.
