Trump’s action was meant as a celebration, but instead left Americans fearing another 9/11 attack

Trump’s Halloween surprise leaves Washington residents fearing a plane crash.

Donald Trump has never been particularly subtle when it comes to putting on a show. Whether celebrating national holidays or entertaining guests at the White House, the president has repeatedly demonstrated a fondness for grand displays involving military equipment.

His latest Halloween celebration was no exception.

While families gathered outside the White House for an evening of costumes and candy, the administration arranged a special aerial spectacle intended to make the occasion even more memorable.

However, the surprise was not quite as enjoyable for people elsewhere in Washington, D.C.

A massive presidential aircraft flew unusually low over the capital on Thursday evening, alarming residents who had received little or no warning about what was happening.

Some feared they were witnessing the beginning of a devastating aviation accident.

A Halloween surprise that frightened more than the children

The aircraft, a military Boeing 747 associated with the presidential fleet, passed over Washington as part of the White House’s Halloween festivities.

According to flight-tracking information cited by The Washington Post, the plane flew at altitudes ranging from approximately 400 to 1,000 feet during parts of its journey.

The aircraft reportedly passed over the White House twice.

From the presidential residence, the display appeared to go exactly as planned.

Footage shared by the White House’s Rapid Response 47 account showed Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump waving toward the aircraft as it flew overhead.

The video was accompanied by a version of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” giving the display a distinctly Halloween-themed soundtrack.

The administration celebrated the spectacle on social media.

“An epic Air Force One flyover at the White House for the trick-or-treaters!” the official account declared.

However, residents watching the enormous aircraft approach buildings in downtown Washington had a rather different reaction.

Residents feared the plane was heading into buildings

Washington has some of the most heavily restricted airspace in the United States, making the sight of a large passenger-style aircraft flying unusually low particularly alarming.

Several residents took to social media to describe their experiences.

“A large jet aircraft just flew over downtown Washington DC (Mass Ave at 15th St NW) at extremely low altitude (maybe 250 feet),” one person wrote on X.

“What’s going on?”

After learning that the flight had been arranged for the Halloween celebration, the person admitted the experience had been frightening.

“It was unexpected, and the altitude and direction made it look like the aircraft was going into the buildings. Glad it was just a flyby!”

Another resident described hearing the approaching aircraft without knowing what was happening.

“I’m probably being that person, but that flyover in DC right now was very scary. Essentially no heads up that it would be happening and it sounded like a regular commercial plane. I don’t mind jets but I actually thought a plane was going to crash.”

Other witnesses shared photographs and videos showing the aircraft passing close to the capital’s buildings.

One person summarized the incident with the comment, “It was Trump, Trumping.”

Another said she had experienced “a mini heart attack along with everyone else on the street.”

Officials reportedly received just 15 minutes’ warning

The surprise was not limited to ordinary residents.

Washington’s own elected officials also expressed concern about the limited advance notice.

The D.C. Council, the district’s 13-member legislature, shared footage of the flyover and said people in downtown Washington, at the Pentagon and at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport had received only 15 minutes’ warning.

Council officials indicated that the aircraft had startled people across the city, including members of their own staff.

The Washington Post also reported that some residents had been reminded of the September 11 terrorist attacks, when hijacked passenger aircraft were deliberately flown into buildings.

However, aviation authorities said the Halloween flight had been coordinated in advance.

A spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed to The Washington Post that the agency had worked with those responsible for the flyover.

Air traffic at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport was also briefly halted to accommodate the aircraft.

The flight was therefore a planned operation rather than an unauthorized aircraft entering restricted airspace.

Trump has a history of spectacular flyovers

The Halloween event was hardly the first occasion on which Trump incorporated military aircraft into a public celebration.

Earlier in the year, helicopters and other aircraft participated in a major military parade in Washington marking the United States’ 250th anniversary.

During Trump’s first presidency, an aircraft used for presidential transport also participated in a July Fourth flyover in 2019.

Such displays have become a familiar feature of the president’s preference for large-scale public celebrations.

The latest flyover also came as Trump adjusted his campaign activities ahead of the midterm elections.

Rather than holding some previously planned in-person rallies, the president has been participating in telephone-based campaign events supporting Republican candidates.

The White House celebrated while Washington recovered from the scare

For guests attending the White House Halloween celebration, the low-flying aircraft provided an unusual addition to the evening’s entertainment.

For people elsewhere in the capital, the experience was considerably less festive.

Although the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the flight had been coordinated, the limited warning left some residents questioning why such a dramatic spectacle had been arranged over a densely populated city.

The distinction between the two reactions was difficult to miss.

Trump and Melania waved at the aircraft from the White House grounds, while people several streets away wondered whether they were watching a plane about to crash.

The administration got its Halloween spectacle, but for some Washington residents, the biggest scare of the evening had nothing to do with costumes.
