The true scale of Russia’s military losses in Ukraine remains heavily disputed, but fresh estimates from both independent researchers and Ukrainian officials suggest the Kremlin is paying an enormous price to sustain the war.

As casualty figures climb, analysts say Moscow’s offensive momentum is beginning to weaken across key sections of the front line, reports The Express.

Conflicting death tolls

Russia rarely publishes official casualty figures, making it difficult to determine the full human cost of the conflict.

Independent Russian outlet Mediazona, working with BBC Russian Service, has confirmed the identities of more than 217,000 Russian soldiers killed since the start of the invasion.

Ukrainian authorities claim the real figure is far higher, estimating total Russian military losses — including wounded personnel — at over 1.3 million.

Western officials have separately estimated that Russia may currently be losing between 30,000 and 35,000 troops each month.

Ukraine has also suffered devastating losses during the war, with reports earlier this year estimating between 500,000 and 600,000 Ukrainian casualties since 2022.

Russian progress slows

Despite continued attacks, recent battlefield analysis suggests Russia’s advances are becoming increasingly limited.

According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukraine regained more territory last month than Russian forces managed to capture.

The development reportedly marked Moscow’s first net territorial setback since Ukraine’s 2024 operation in Russia’s Kursk region.

Analysts say Russia still controls around 20% of Ukrainian territory, but gains have become slower and more expensive as the conflict drags on.

Ukrainian claims

Ukrainian officials argue Russian forces are beginning to show signs of exhaustion after years of continuous fighting.

Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov claimed Ukraine inflicted exceptionally heavy losses on Russian troops during recent operations.

“We have eliminated 35,000 Russians in both April and March,” Fedorov said.

He added that Moscow is increasingly struggling to maintain large-scale offensive operations along the front.

Parade reveals strain

Observers also noted unusual changes during Russia’s Victory Day celebrations in Moscow earlier this month.

The annual military parade, traditionally filled with tanks and heavy equipment, reportedly featured fewer armored vehicles and relied more heavily on staged video presentations.

Some analysts interpreted the scaled-back display as evidence that military hardware is being prioritized for combat operations in Ukraine rather than symbolic public events.

The war has now become the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II.
