A Ukrainian drone strike on 21 May has forced one of Russia’s oil refineries into a complete shutdown, the Ukrainian General Staff has confirmed.

Ukraine’s armed forces have confirmed that the oil refinery in the Russian city of Syzran has halted operations.

The shutdown followed a Ukrainian drone strike on 21 May that hit the facility’s primary refining unit.

The confirmation comes from the Ukrainian General Staff, which published the announcement on Facebook.

Refinery Taken Offline

The Syzran refinery is located in Russia’s Samara region and is one of the country’s larger oil processing facilities.

The General Staff states that the shutdown has been confirmed on the basis of preliminary damage assessments carried out after the strike.

“Based on preliminary strike assessments, the shutdown of the Syzran oil refinery (Syzran, Samara Region, Russian Federation), which was targeted by Ukraine’s Defense Forces on May 21, 2026, has been confirmed,” the General Staff said in its statement.

Additional Strikes Confirmed

The same statement from the General Staff includes details of several other successful strikes.

At the Yaroslavl depot, hit on 25 May, equipment and tank infrastructure have been confirmed as damaged. On 24 May, Ukrainian forces also successfully struck a Russian 1L125 Niobiy-SV radar station in Irsk in the Luhansk region.

During the night of 26 May, Ukrainian forces carried out strikes against a number of other Russian military targets.

Among the installations hit were a Russian command post in Ocheretyne in the Donetsk region and a regimental command centre in Verkhnia Krynytsia in the Zaporizhzhia region.

Drones and Logistics in the Crosshairs

Ukrainian forces also struck Russian drone command centres near Nesterianka in the Zaporizhzhia region and Novohrodivka in the Donetsk region.

In addition, a drone depot and a logistics warehouse near Novopetrykvika in the Donetsk region were hit, and a Russian railway fuel tanker carrying fuel and lubricants near Debaltseve was destroyed.

The strikes against logistics and fuel supplies point to a deliberate Ukrainian strategy aimed at weakening Russia’s ability to supply its front lines.

The combination of attacks on energy infrastructure and military command posts underlines that Ukraine continues to operate deep inside Russian territory.
