In recent days, tensions between Hungary and Ukraine have sharply escalated, with serious accusations being exchanged.
As diplomatic observers monitor the situation closely, the spotlight has once again turned to the already strained relationship between Budapest and Kyiv.
Orban Condemns Alleged Ukrainian Intelligence Operation
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban publicly accused Ukrainian intelligence services of launching an unprecedented attack on Hungary’s defense forces.
Orban made the statements in a video posted on his official Facebook page, following an emergency meeting of Hungary’s National Security Council, according to Digi24.

Orban claimed the alleged operation was intended to sabotage a planned Hungarian referendum on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. He also accused members of Hungary’s domestic opposition of collaborating with Ukrainian operatives.
“This has never happened before in our history. We must expect further actions from Ukrainian intelligence until the survey is completed,” Orban said. “Hungarian intelligence services are prepared for this.”
Despite the allegations, Orban reaffirmed that Hungary would proceed with its planned referendum, insisting, “Neither Brussels nor Kyiv can decide for the Hungarian people.”
Hungary’s Controversial Referendum
Orban first announced the referendum in March, calling on Hungarian citizens to express their opinion on whether Ukraine should be allowed to join the EU.
Although the vote is non-binding, Budapest is expected to use the result to reinforce its political stance during negotiations with the European Union.
Orban has argued that Ukraine’s EU accession would harm Hungary’s economy. However, recent polling suggests a majority of Hungarians actually support Ukraine’s membership bid.
The EU is reportedly exploring options to bypass Hungary’s potential veto on Ukraine’s accession talks.
