When a country faces a relentless aerial threat, defending its skies becomes a race against time.
Securing advanced weaponry from allies is vital, but sometimes a nation must build those defenses on its own soil. A bold new proposal aims to do exactly that, reports The Express U.S.
Seeking a shield
Ukraine is seeking a groundbreaking deal to manufacture American Patriot air defense missiles domestically. The Express U.S reported that President Volodymyr Zelensky has appealed to Donald Trump to secure the necessary production licenses.
The request comes as Kyiv prepares for an imminent Russian offensive. While a local production line would not help fend off this immediate assault, officials view it as a vital long-term strategy to neutralize ballistic attacks.
Zelensky highlighted global supply pressures to outline the urgency. He noted, “In the United States, there is not enough production of anti-ballistic missiles, and this could lead to a crisis in various parts of the world,”
He confirmed he has already reached out to American lawmakers. Zelensky added, “Russia is increasing its own production of ballistic missiles. I have sent a letter to the White House and the US Congress. I hope they will understand and respond.”
Testing the waters
Currently, only Germany and Japan hold licenses to build Patriot systems. However, Ukraine has already proven its ability to rapidly manufacture high-tech drones and missiles under wartime conditions.
The push for stronger shields follows worrying reports of Russian drones encroaching on neighboring countries. Last week, a Russian drone struck a residential building in Romania, signaling what Zelensky believes is a deliberate effort to test Western resolve.
According to the Ukrainian leader, Moscow is using these incursions to measure how the alliance reacts. Zelensky warned, “And he is also testing the air defense of NATO countries that border Russia or Belarus. Are they capable of intercepting all missiles and drones?”
Fighting back
Despite the looming offensive, Zelensky claimed that Russian forces lost the battlefield initiative six months ago. He suggested that peace negotiations should begin before winter, proposing that Britain, France, and Germany represent Europe in the talks.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces continue to strike deep inside Russian territory. Drones recently destroyed a vital pipeline station in the Kirov region, roughly 800 miles away, instantly choking off oil flows used to fund the Kremlin’s war effort.
Another strike set fire to the Saratov Oil Refinery. Still, the conflict continues to take a heavy toll on civilians, with recent Russian attacks injuring residents in Odesa and the Chernihiv region.
