Doing a Trump: Germany to reject undocumented immigrants at border, asylum seekers included

It will recind an instruction from 2015 aimed at reducing illegal migration.

Germany tightens borders

Interior Minister of Germany, Alexander Dobrindt, wednesday issued an order to tighten the German borders – specifically rejecting undocumentet migrants, including asylum seekers.

Clarity, consistency, control

German newspaper Bild was the first to report the news, saying that Dobrindt insisted the change in policy is an “issue about clarity, consistency and control”.

Reversing Merkels orders

A 2015 instruction given by then-chancellor Angela Merkel allowed for undocumented migrants to enter Germany in an effort to reduce illegal migration. Merkels term was definded by mass-arrival of asylum seekers, especially Syrians fleeing the war in Syria.

3000 additional officers

Dobrindt further explained that another 3000 officers will be sent to the German borders, bringing the total to 14,000.

Is it legal?

Rejecting asylum seekers is legally controversial, but before the general election in Germany, newly-elected chancellor Friedrich Merz promised to fight migration.

Coordinating with neighbours

The coalition between Merz’ conservatives and the Social Democrats state that the tightening of the borders should be mad in coordination with neighbouring countries.
