President Donald Trump weighed in on the question of whether he might run for a third term, telling CNBC’s Squawk Box on Tuesday that he “probably won’t”, but not before noting he’s enjoying “the best polling numbers” of his career.

His comments come amid renewed chatter about the possibility of him seeking another term, despite clear constitutional limits.

The 22nd Amendment Roadblock

The U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment prohibits any person from being elected president more than twice, regardless of whether those terms are consecutive.

This rule applies to Trump as well, even though his first and second terms were separated by Joe Biden’s presidency. Legal experts say overturning this restriction would require a constitutional amendment an uphill battle in today’s political climate.

    Allies Float Loopholes

Despite the legal barrier, Trump’s allies and at times Trump himself, have floated potential workarounds.

These range from repealing the 22nd Amendment to more unconventional ideas, like running for vice president and then assuming the presidency if the elected president stepped down. Such suggestions remain hypothetical but fuel ongoing speculation.

    Previous Hints of Interest

This isn’t the first time Trump has hinted at extending his time in office. Back in March, he told NBC there are “ways” to return if he wanted to pursue it.

The president has a long history of testing political boundaries and keeping future plans deliberately vague to maintain public interest and political leverage.

The Official Line From the White House

When asked earlier this year, White House communications director Steven Cheung stressed that it’s “far too early” for such discussions.

He said Trump is focused on “undoing all the damage Biden has done” and continuing his “America First” agenda.

Still, the persistent speculation and Trump’s own comments suggest the idea hasn’t been entirely shelved.

In a move sure to keep the rumor mill spinning, Trump’s official merchandise store is already selling “Trump 2028” products.

Whether this is a tongue‑in‑cheek marketing play or a genuine hint at ambitions beyond his current term, it signals that the former president is in no hurry to tamp down third‑term talk.
