‘I have decided to leave’: Ronaldo quits Portugal squad after manager drops him

Ronaldo stormed out of Portugal’s camp following a row with manager Jorge Jesus over his benching.

When time on the pitch begins to shrink for a historic star, personal tension can quickly eclipse matchday tactics and disrupt the national team fold.

Cristiano Ronaldo walked out on Portugal ahead of their Nations League match against Denmark.

Having missed three consecutive practice sessions, the 41-year-old forward made a swift exit from Portugal’s Copenhagen base, boarding a private aircraft bound for home shortly after it touched down.

This drastic move followed a frustrating evening on the sidelines. Tensions had already surfaced during Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Norway, where the veteran captain spent the full ninety minutes as an unused substitute.

Excluding injuries and suspensions, it was his first omission from a international fixture in 18 years.

Rather than joining his squad to acknowledge the traveling supporters after the final whistle, he headed straight for the dressing room, according to the Daily Mail.

Heated bench dispute

Matters came to a head on Wednesday after head coach Jorge Jesus implied that Goncalo Ramos would retain his starting spot against Denmark, though the manager attempted to play down talk of a rift during his media appearance.

“There was no incident whatsoever,” Jesus stated, according to the Daily Mail.

“Any player – and I was a player myself – when you spend 20 or 30 minutes warming up and then don’t get on, no-one is happy about that. Afterwards, as coach, I decided not to bring him on. It’s nothing to make a fuss about.”

The manager added a blunt comment about the star’s role: “If I need him, he’ll come on. If I don’t need him, he won’t.”

Promise of truth

After holding private talks with the Portuguese Football Federation president, the forward announced his sudden departure on social media.

“After the national team coach’s press conference, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the national team training camp,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram.

“In due time, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that led to my departure from the national team, to which I have always dedicated myself. Now is the time to wish good luck to Portugal and to all my teammates.”

The Portuguese Football Federation acknowledged the departure in a brief release, confirming that the remaining 24-man squad is entirely focused on the upcoming fixture, the Daily Mail reports.
