What is happening?

Russia celebrates it’s National Day today, June 12th, and US Secretary of State has issued a statement congratulating the Russian people.
On behalf of the American people

The statement said:
“On behalf of the American people, I want to congratulate the Russian people on Russia Day.”

The statement went on, saying:
“The United States remains committed to supporting the Russian people as they continue to build on their aspirations for a brighter future.”
The Ukraine-Russia war

Rubio also used the occassion to touch on the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine:
“We also take this opportunity to reaffirm the United States’ desire for constructive engagement with the Russian Federation to bring about a durable peace between Russia and Ukraine.”
Day of adoption

The Russian National Day was called “Day of adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty”.
It has been celebrated annualy since 1992 and marks the political act that began the consitutional reform of Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union.
