Professor Michael Clarke is a defence analyst for Sky News. He told the Daily Express how this shadow war could reach British soil.
Danger on the water
The most realistic flashpoint sits right on the ocean. Britain could soon face a tense maritime standoff with Russian vessels.
Clarke sees trouble brewing if military forces intercept a Russian shadow fleet tanker. Moscow would not take that quietly.
“The prospect of a militarised confrontation is, in my view, most likely at sea. We might intercept a shadow fleet tanker, and the Russians would retaliate by seizing British ships somewhere else in the world, maybe in Asia, British-registered ships,” Clarke told the Express.
Things could quickly escalate if a Russian frigate arrived in British waters.
Skies and servers
The danger extends into the clouds. Armed forces might have to shoot down Russian drones entering restricted airspace.
On the ground, digital systems face an invisible assault. Cyber threats have multiplied at a staggering rate over two years.
“In 2022, the British government was dealing with about 50 or 60 serious cyber attacks a year, very few of which worked,” Clarke explained.
“And now, they were dealing with five times that number, between 250 and 300 serious cyber attacks. The sort of cyber attacks that brought Jaguar Land Rover to a halt for a couple of months that year.”
Lights out
A successful digital breach could plunge whole cities into total darkness.
“Or it could be something which attacks the national grid, which creates lots of power outages in different parts of the country. We don’t know until it happens. But sooner or later, some of those attacks will work,” Clarke added.
A direct ground fight remains a distant possibility. British troops stationed in Estonia could become targets if Moscow tests NATO borders.
“Russians might choose to try to isolate British troops in Estonia in order to demonstrate that Britain is the target, as well as Estonia,” the expert warned.
