Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held talks with US envoys while facing accusations from Donald Trump regarding his commitment to peace.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held discussions with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. According to the Kyiv Post, these talks occurred alongside uncertainty regarding the approach of Washington toward Moscow. Following the call, Zelensky stated that progress depends on the position of the US administration.

The engagement occurred as US President Donald Trump accused the Ukrainian leader of obstructing peace efforts. In a Sunday social media post, Trump wrote, “Zelensky doesn’t care, and frankly, with all of the money that Europe is famously giving him… he doesn’t want to end this war.” Despite the accusation, the US leader asserted he was making great progress toward a peace agreement.

Zelensky emphasized a commitment to ending the conflict, stating his government is ready to work constructively. During discussions with the envoys, he also prioritized conversations regarding deliveries of Patriot air defense systems. The Ukrainian leader expressed gratitude to Washington for resuming the sharing of intelligence data.

Energy infrastructure and reciprocal strikes

These exchanges coincided with an escalation of reciprocal strikes targeting energy infrastructure. Zelensky accused the Russian military of violating a proposed energy ceasefire on 76 occasions. The Ukrainian leader warned that Moscow is attempting to deprive citizens of electricity and heating ahead of winter.

Russian bombardments damaged utilities and left tens of thousands of civilians without power. In response to these attacks, the Ukrainian military launched drones toward Saint Petersburg. Russian state media characterized the raid as the largest attack on the city since the invasion began.

Regional governor Alexander Drozdenko reported that air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 144 Ukrainian drones. Despite these measures, the assault ignited a fire at an oil refinery. Authorities in Saint Petersburg confirmed that the strike resulted in the death of 1 civilian.

Geopolitical concerns and global fuel markets

Trump criticized the Ukrainian military for its strategy of targeting oil facilities. He argued that these attacks are damaging global diesel markets and impacting domestic fuel prices. This criticism emerges while the US administration is pursuing a trade agreement with Moscow.

European and Ukrainian officials remain concerned that the White House is steering foreign policy toward Russian interests. The Wall Street Journal reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed discussing the conflict without including Ukrainian representatives. This format would feature discussions between Putin, Trump, and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

The Ukrainian president addressed these shifts during an interview with NBC News. Zelensky warned that it would be a mistake if Washington decided to align itself with Russia. He concluded the interview by expressing hope that the president will change his decisions.
