Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently held talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. Instead of standard diplomatic summaries, the post-meeting press conference quickly turned into a direct attack on Ukrainian leadership.

Lavrov took aim at Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, accusing him of avoiding real negotiations.

According to Russian state news agency TASS, the Russian minister accused Zelensky of disregarding normal diplomacy, asserting that he instead “plays to the public.”

The critique focused heavily on how Ukraine shares its political messages. Lavrov described this approach as “megaphone diplomacy,” pointing to recent public statements.

“He announces everything publicly, including the insulting message he recently sent to President Putin,” Lavrov said.

The underlying causes

These public arguments happen against a backdrop of ongoing international peace efforts. Russia still appreciates the diplomatic work coming out of Ankara, but Moscow maintains a strict position on any potential future peace deals.

Lavrov emphasized that temporary fixes will not work for the Kremlin. According to TASS, the minister noted “that any sustainable, long-term, and reliable settlement requires addressing the root causes of the crisis.”

But the Russian foreign minister did not stop with criticisms of Ukraine. He soon expanded his targets to include western European nations and their current military discussions.

Western military ambitions

Germany is rushing to increase its military power given the geopolitical situation, but according to Lavrov this military growth is part of a broader effort by Western nations to act as global leaders who make choices for everyone else.

In this political environment, the Russian minister argued that dangerous historical ideologies are returning to the continent. He accused European leaders of ignoring radical political moves in Kiev while falsely branding them as progressive.

According to Lavrov, “Nazi tendencies are becoming especially pronounced because the Zelensky regime openly pursues a policy of rehabilitating Nazi war criminals and Nazi ideology without hesitation or disguise. Europe responds to these specific and outrageous actions, including the reburial of collaborators convicted by the Nuremberg Tribunal, by applauding and declaring that Zelensky is defending European values.”
