Russia runs on carefully crafted messages and managed expectations.
When a massive national project starts failing, leaders must quickly invent a brand new reality for their citizens. Now, a massive propaganda shift is reportedly brewing behind closed doors.
Drafting a new reality
The Russian Presidential Administration is actively developing a fresh narrative to end the current conflict. Officials want to frame a potential exit from the grueling invasion as a stunning national victory.
The Moscow Times cited by United24Media reports that political leaders are terrified of the economic and demographic risks of a prolonged fight. Internal documents warn that continuing the aggressive pace would require a total shift to a war economy and massive tax hikes.
A presentation circulated among top officials offered a blunt assessment of the military situation. The document stated that “You have to know when to stop in time,” according to The Moscow Times.
Changing the goalposts
To sell this sudden peace plan, the Kremlin will drastically alter its original military objectives. Propaganda networks will completely stop talking about capturing the Ukrainian capital or replacing its government.
State media will instead celebrate the occupation of the Donbas, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions. Officials will simply claim that taking the capital city was never part of the original military design.
Authorities also expect massive backlash from extreme pro-war commentators.
To silence radical bloggers, the administration plans an organized “emotional transformation” while threatening dissenters with strict criminal charges for discrediting the military.
Returning soldiers pose another massive political threat to the state. The administration plans to ship veterans away to reconstruction projects or assign them to the Africa Corps to keep them busy and distracted.
Fighting continues
For regular citizens, the government intends to offer a temporary “controlled thaw” in cultural censorship.
The Moscow Times writes this might include bringing political humor back to television while keeping strict internet bans active.
Despite these secret diplomatic plans, the violence on the ground remains incredibly intense. Russian forces launched over 100 drones and three missiles across multiple regions on May 6.
The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed the massive aerial assault happened during a scheduled period of silence. One woman died when a drone hit a civilian vehicle in the Sumy region.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha strongly condemned the violent holiday attack. He stated that the brutal strikes proved Moscow completely rejects any genuine diplomatic efforts and peace initiatives.
