Donald Trump famously promised to end the conflict in a single day.

That never happened. The grueling war continues to rage on. Now, diplomats are floating the idea of fresh peace talks while simultaneously tossing new insults at Washington.

Kremlin criticism

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow has “always emphasized its readiness for dialogue” regarding Ukraine, according to comments reported by RIA Novosti and cited by Onet.

However, she stressed that Russia is only interested in negotiations with “real impact and real results.”

Zakharova also took aim at American officials, claiming representatives responsible for contacts with Moscow are now “fully engaged in the conflict in the Middle East.”

Pressure on Washington

Her remarks come as the United States remains deeply involved in growing tensions involving Iran and regional security concerns across the Middle East.

The Kremlin spokeswoman suggested this could affect Washington’s ability to focus on negotiations over Ukraine.

Moscow has repeatedly accused Western governments of prolonging the war while publicly claiming to support diplomacy.

Putin’s demands

Despite signaling openness to talks, the Kremlin continues insisting on several key conditions before any settlement can be reached.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Moscow seeks a “long-term resolution” and argues that what Russia calls the “root causes” of the conflict must first be removed.

These include halting NATO expansion and addressing what the Kremlin describes as pressure on Russian-speaking populations in Ukraine.

No compromise

Russia is currently participating in discussions linked to US-backed peace proposals, but Kremlin officials remain openly skeptical about Kyiv’s willingness to negotiate.

Ukraine and its Western allies reject Moscow’s justifications for the invasion and accuse Russia of using diplomacy to gain strategic advantages on the battlefield.
