Passing drivers eventually spotted the battered man on the roadside
Nature can deliver a series of events that sound straight out of a Hollywood script.
When disaster strikes, people rely on basic survival instincts. But sometimes, the universe tests a person’s absolute limits with a bizarre chain reaction of terrible luck.
A wild escape
A Russian marine on leave from the war in Ukraine went horseback riding in the mountainous Altai Republic. According to the Daily Mail, his peaceful trip quickly turned into a chaotic struggle.
The unnamed soldier told medics that he spotted a brown bear charging toward him. He urged his horse toward a tree, hoping to tie the animal down before facing the predator.
Just as he reached the branches, a freak weather event intervened. A massive bolt of lightning slammed into the tree, ripping straight through both the horse and the rider.
Struck and trapped
The electrical charge killed the animal instantly. As the heavy creature collapsed, it pinned the soldier’s leg to the ground.
Dmitry Khubezov serves as a spokesman for the regional health ministry. He explained that the lightning hit the man’s neck and set his collar on fire.
“His whole body was instantly paralysed,” Khubezov said. “Only one arm could move, and even then only with great difficulty.”
Meanwhile, the angry bear remained nearby and watched the scene unfold.
Fighting for survival
Relying on just his single working arm, the marine dragged his crushed leg out from under the dead horse. He then began a desperate crawl toward a highway located more than half a mile away.
The regional health ministry told the TASS news agency that the bear followed the paralyzed man. The pursuit only ended when the soldier fired his rifle to scare the beast.
Suffering from severe heart palpitations along the dirt path, the marine began punching his own chest to perform emergency CPR.
Reaching the road
Passing drivers eventually spotted the battered man on the roadside and rushed him to a local hospital. Medical staff were completely shocked by his incredible tale of survival.
One medic confessed their initial doubts to reporters. “When I first heard it, I didn’t believe it until I spoke to him myself,” the health worker said. “But it’s all absolutely true.”
The soldier is currently recovering in the ward. His family has already suffered massive losses, as his two older brothers died fighting in Ukraine.
“Whatever happens in life, no matter how difficult it may be, you must never give up,” Khubezov told reporters.
