The new facility gives Washington a far more visible presence in the Greenlandic capital. Its opening comes at a sensitive moment for local politics and Arctic diplomacy.

According to TV 2 Denmark, the United States has opened a new 3,000-square-meter consulate in central Nuuk, replacing the smaller harbor-side office it had used since 2020.

Helle Nørrelund Sørensen, a journalist specializing in Greenland, told TV 2 the move marks a clear shift from a modest consulate near the fishing and industrial harbor to one of Nuuk’s largest and most central buildings.

US Ambassador to Denmark Ken Howery told the Danish broadcaster that the building should function as a meeting place for Greenlandic and American artists, students, business leaders and researchers.

Opening comes amid mistrust

The inauguration follows repeated threats by US President Donald Trump to take over Greenland, TV 2 writes. The comments have made the consulate opening unusually sensitive.

Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark but has extensive self-government. Its leaders have repeatedly stressed that decisions about its future must be made by Greenlanders.

Howery denied that the central location was about surveillance. He told TV 2: “President Trump is originally a real estate man. It’s about location, location, location.”

Demonstrators planned to turn their backs toward the consulate and hold a two-minute silent protest during the opening.

The Greenlandic outlet KNR quoted organizer Aqqalukkuluk Fontain as saying: “We will make it clear to the USA that our self-determination and future are determined by the Greenlandic people.”

Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, did not attend the ceremony.

Envoy visit adds friction

The opening followed a visit by Jeff Landry, Trump’s special envoy to Greenland. TV 2 reported that his trip left uncertainty over what he had achieved.

The network also reported that Landry shared a misleading aircraft photo after leaving, showing a large US military plane even though he departed on a smaller Gulfstream aircraft.

Sermitsiaq quoted Landry as saying the United States recognized only one line: “There is only one line for us. It is red, white and blue.”

Greenland’s location gives it importance for Arctic security, shipping access, surveillance and natural resources. That has made US engagement more sensitive, especially when paired with talk of control.

AFP reported that Landry said it was time for the United States to put its “footprint” back in Greenland.

Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten separately published an analysis arguing that Washington may be expanding influence through diplomacy, investment and security efforts rather than formal annexation.

For many in Nuuk, the new consulate has become part of a wider debate over Greenland’s political future.
