The surprising story behind JD Vance’s real name — and his four name changes

Secrets about the Vice President are starting to surface.

Most people know him simply as JD Vance — short, sharp and easy to fit onto a campaign poster.

Reality behind the name is a lot messier.

Long before becoming Vice President of the United States, Vance had already changed his name multiple times while navigating a chaotic childhood marked by addiction, unstable family relationships and a revolving door of father figures.

Officially, the man now standing one heartbeat from the presidency is legally named James David Vance.

Getting there took a while.

Born with a completely different surname

Vance entered the world in Middletown, Ohio under the name James Donald Bow.

Childhood at home quickly became turbulent after his parents divorced and his mother struggled with drug addiction.

When Vance was six years old, his mother remarried Robert Hamel, who later adopted him. Following the adoption, his name was legally changed to James David Hamel.

That became the first major identity shift in his life.

Stories from those years later became central to Vance’s bestselling memoir Hillbilly Elegy, which was eventually turned into a Hollywood film directed by Ron Howard and starring Amy Adams and Glenn Close.

Terrifying childhood memories

Vance has openly discussed several traumatic experiences from his upbringing.

During an interview with NPR, he recalled a moment when his mother allegedly threatened to crash their car while both children were inside.

“[I] hopped in the back seat to hide from her. And this got her really angry. And she stopped the car and pulled over and, I think, was going to start hitting me. And so I ran,” Vance said.

Much of his childhood was later shaped by his grandparents, who effectively raised him during periods of instability at home.

Why “Donald” disappeared

Vance eventually became deeply uncomfortable carrying parts of names tied to people he no longer felt connected to.

Inside Hillbilly Elegy, he explained that he intentionally distanced himself from “Donald” while keeping the initials J.D.

“Any old D name would have done, so long as it wasn’t Donald,” Vance wrote.

For years he continued using the name James David Hamel, including throughout high school, military service in Iraq and even while attending Ohio State University and Yale Law School.

“Nothing compared to the revolving door”

Another turning point came after his mother and adoptive father divorced.

Vance later admitted he hated having to explain why he carried a surname connected to someone no longer present in his life.

“I shared a name with no one I really cared about,” he wrote.

“Of all the things that I hated about my childhood, nothing compared to the revolving door of father figures.”

Eventually, Vance decided to honor the person he credits most for raising him — his grandmother Bonnie Blanton Vance, whom he affectionately called “Mamaw.”

From J.D. to JD

After taking the surname Vance, he publicly styled himself for years as “J.D. Vance.”

That changed once his political career began accelerating.

Campaign staff confirmed in 2021 that the dots disappeared intentionally as part of a simplified public rebrand.

Today, most Americans know him simply as JD Vance — though the name on official documents remains James David Vance.
